Advanced Studies 2026

Building Earth Observation Dashboards

Over two intensive weeks, MSS26 students learned to build interactive web applications that transform satellite and geospatial data into decision-making tools. The course: 20% lecture, 80% hands-on coding.

  • Real satellite and spatial data (Copernicus, OpenData)
  • Interactive maps with Leaflet.js and modern JavaScript
  • Deployed publicly on GitHub Pages
  • 5-minute pitch + live demo format

Project 1

🚢 LogiRhein Live

Le Rhin, en direct. The Rhine, live.

An immersive scrollytelling web application that visualizes how Rhine water levels directly impact Europe's most critical inland shipping corridor, right here through Strasbourg.

  • The crisis: In 2018, record low water at the Kaub gauge paralyzed Rhine shipping for months, costing billions
  • The cascade: Low water → reduced cargo → factory shutdowns → consumer price spikes
  • The tool: Interactive gauge simulator, real-time data layers, and economic impact calculator
  • Local connection: "Strasbourg: NOUS SOMMES ICI" on the Rhine corridor map

Key Features

  • 3D globe zoom to Rhine corridor
  • Historical crisis timeline (2018 & 2022)
  • Interactive water level gauge
  • Economic cascade visualization
  • Bilingual (FR/EN) with live data

Project 2

🌍 ABIL

Sustainability, seen from space.

A premium, high-resolution Earth Observation platform that turns every satellite pass into a traceable environmental score per asset, mapping real-time data to international regulations.

  • Traceable metrics: Fuses carbon footprint, optical, and thermal satellite observations
  • Asset-level scores: Environmental ratings updated automatically with each orbit
  • Interactive UI: Deep, clean mapping and data dashboards tailored for ESG compliance
